In turn, the body transmits information to the brain.<\/p>\n<p>When the spinal cord is permanently damaged , the part of the body above the injury functions normally. However, the zone of the injury does not receive commands from the brain anymore. The zone below will keep its structure intact but will not be able to send and receive information to and from the brain. As a consequence of this, the motor, sensitive and vegetative functions are altered.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the level of the interruption, the effect can be a paraplegia (paralysis of the lower members) or a tetraplegia (paralysis of both upper and lower members).<\/p>\n<p>Spinal cord injury does not mean only not being able to walk, but also an alteration of sensitivity of the body, sexual functions, sphincter control\u2026 The person changes from a healthy and independent life style to having to adapt to a new personal reality, new life style and new relationship with his or her environment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-6 col-md-6 verticalmode\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.medular.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/columna-ancho.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"476\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default panel-odd\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><a class=\"accordion-toggle collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordionname73\" href=\"#collapse731\"><h5><i class=\"icon-minus primary-color\"><\/i><i class=\"icon-plus\"><\/i>Causes of Spinal Cord Injury<\/h5><\/a><\/div><div id=\"collapse731\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \"><div class=\"panel-body postclass\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-6 col-md-6\">\n<p>Spinal Cord Injury can occur because of medical or traumatic causes<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #aaa; font-style: italic;\"><strong><span class=\"berdea\">Traumatic causes<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Among traumatic causes you can find traffic accidents, work accidents, sport injuries, falls, diving accidents\u2026  Always sudden and without notice.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #aaa; font-style: italic;\"><strong><span class=\"berdea\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.6rem; line-height: 2.2rem;\">Medical causes<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The medical causes are usually spinal cord tumours, infection, vascular problems\u2026 Usually developing slowly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-6 col-md-6\">\nThe yearly number of new cases of cord injury in Spain is between 800 and 1000 .<\/p>\n<p>The number of people with spinal cord injury in Spain is estimated to be more than 30000. Among them, between 70 and 80% are due to traumatic causes, being traffic accidents the most common cause.<\/p>\n<p>The typical profile of a person with spinal cord injury is a  male around 35 years old, with spinal cord injury caused by a traffic accident.  If there are no complications, the lifespan of the patient will be equal to the rest of population.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default panel-even\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><a class=\"accordion-toggle collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordionname73\" href=\"#collapse732\"><h5><i class=\"icon-minus primary-color\"><\/i><i class=\"icon-plus\"><\/i>What services does FLM offer?<\/h5><\/a><\/div><div id=\"collapse732\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \"><div class=\"panel-body postclass\">\n<p>The services offered by the Fundaci\u00f3n del Lesionado Medular are the following:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-6 col-md-6 verticalmode\">\n<div class=\"historia\">\n<div class=\"titular_historia\">\n<p><a title=\"Abre p\u00e1gina tratamientos de la Fundaci\u00f3n del Lesionado Medular\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/en\/rehabilitation-services-for-people-with-sci\/\" target=\"_self\"><span class=\"berdea\">Jos\u00e9 Rodr\u00edguez Rehabilitation Centre Service<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-6 col-md-6 verticalmode\">\n<p>This centre has functional rehabilitation services (physiotherapy and occupational therapy) and access to the different Workshops.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clearfix borde-historia\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-6 col-md-6 verticalmode\">\n<div class=\"historia\">\n<div class=\"titular_historia\">\n<p>Services <span class=\"berdea\">Residential Centre<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-6 col-md-6 verticalmode\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Day care Centre is funded by the Social Affairs Department of the Regional Government of Madrid. Currently, all the places are state-subsidized, therefore the access has to be arranged through Public Administration Services.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clearfix borde-historia\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-6 col-md-6 verticalmode\">\n<div class=\"historia\">\n<div class=\"titular_historia\">\n<p><a title=\"Abre p\u00e1gina Instalaciones de Residencia de la Fundaci\u00f3n del Lesionado Medular\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/en\/residential-centre-for-people-with-sci\/\" target=\"_self\"><span class=\"berdea\">Residential Centre Services<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-6 col-md-6 verticalmode\">\n<p>The Residential Centre has 74 places, of which 59 are currently state-subsidized by the Social Affairs Department of the Regional Government of Madrid.
